December 22: Facebook’s Upcoming Major Change

Friday, December 16, 2011

imageFacebook is set to bring change next Thursday as it rolls out its new Timeline format for Facebook profiles. Whether this be the last straw before deactivating your account or the change that makes you fall back in love with it again is entirely up in mid air.  I have gotten timeline and it will require some getting used to. However, I won’t be surprised when my newsfeed fills with angry voices!

If you haven’t been given the preview already, you can get it here, but if you just want a tour, I can show you around.

When you first start, here is how it will look like:

image

On the top, you can place a Cover which is an image that will essentially be the background behind your profile picture and above your name. In the box with your profile picture, you will have prominent information about you and some graphic designs for friends and people you know (which I have censored in respect for my friends’ privacy) and recent activity. Like usual, you can post on your wall, but it will place itself in different columns with a timeline down the center.

As you scroll down, you can look at your statuses and content in a rather eloquent way and aesthetically, it is very appealing.

You can modify this timeline by adding statuses and the like. Hover your mouse on the timeline and you will see a plus sign. Click and it will ask you what you want to add.

For those of you, like me who are wondering what a Life Event is, it is something that changed in your life.

image

Each of these categories have extensive additions that can essentially create an online timeline tracking your life from birth to death – if you wanted to.

Here is a small preview of each of them.

Work & Education

image

Family & Relationships

image

Home & Living

image

Health & Wellness

image

Travel & Experiences

I think some of these options may be too extensive for a social networking site but I can’t help thinking of the beginning of Fallout 3 when you grow up and have to choose all the settings when I look at this!

If you get lost in your timeline, you will always be able to access Facebook’s main menu bar and a Timeline bar and chronological side bar as shown.

image

Facebook will divide up your timeline as seen in the side bar and it will look like is. Note that there actually is a part or being born.

image

You can filter the timeline to find certain types of posts or events.

image

You can also edit stuff on your timeline, but don’t look for the same editing capability as Google +. By editing, you can change the date, location or hide it from your Timeline.

image

By clicking on the star, you can set a featured post on your timeline. Doing this will enlarge the event to 2 columns wide.

image

Clicking the star again will reverse the action.

Posts compact themselves and feature symbols for shares.

image

Birthdays used to clutter walls with a bunch of posts… Not anymore.

image

Your activity log displays everything you did on Facebook. From the photos that you changed to the links that were posted on your wall to the comments that you gave elsewhere. You can filter what you want to find with the All menu on the top right corner.

image

Your about page also got a facelift and looks like your timeline with all of your info neatly displayed.

Going to a friend’s profile with timeline will take the same format as yours. IN their information panes, however, Facebook will point out mutuality and display your friendship status and other options – like calling or messaging the person. Like before, you can post to their timeline which effectively replaces the wall.

image

Do note that when your timeline goes live, it will be set as public. To prevent this from happening, get timeline – or when it gets imposed on you –, go to privacy settings, click on manage past post visibility.

image

It will prompt for confirmation, follow through and you will be fine.

This pretty much concludes my tour of Facebook’s timeline which will be taking over on December 22. If you’re excited or want to try it out, you can go here. So, is this the last straw to make you abandon Facebook, or is his the change that re-inspires the way you network? The comment field is below and like usual you can subscribe to our updates on Facebook, Google + and Twitter.
