There have been many recent hits on computer's with a virus that has previously been mentioned in this blog. The virus where a site displays an interface similar to the computer's version of windows explorer. This has been becoming a problem to many people who don't know better than to click on suspicious activity; and to those people who don't know how to suspect an attack.
These sites, when clicked anywhere on the page, prompts you to download a harmful file that, when ran, acts like E.T. and "phones home". The file IS calling it's parent, but it's parent is an extremely dangerous virus that will slow down your computer until it freezes. Then, once restarted, your computer will be unable to log in, as the virus has altered your registry in order to prevent use of your computer.
Now, there's a simple way to fix this problem and, to tell you the truth, the tool is actually built in to your computer. This tool is called system restore. Run your computer in safe mode. You can do this by pressing F8 and selecting safe mode.
If you don't know where to find this tool simply go to start menu>accessories>system tools>system restore. Once ran you will choose to restore your computer to a previous point. If you haven't created a restore point, you're screwed. If you have, then that's great news.
Once you have restored your computer to the restore point, your computer will be functional again. Although, you have a limited time before the virus disables your computer once again.
What you do once the restore is complete is you do a complete scan of your computer with your AntiVirus. If you do not have one, ones I would recommend using would be Avast!, Microsoft Security Essentials, or AVG Free. All of these are free and are more than able to complete the aforementioned job.
