Getting Started with Windows 8: Backing up Files

Monday, August 20, 2012

One  of the most important things a person should do with a computer is set up a back up system to ensure that no files get lost if something went wrong down the road. Windows 8 comes with a built-in backup utility called File History which is very easy to set up. It does, however, require you to use a network drive or an external hard drive and won’t let you use the internal hard drive. One of the advantages of File History is that it doesn’t create a backup file that requires a program to read it, instead it creates a directory on the hard drive where all the files are simply copied over at the rate of your choosing. Let’s get started!

Windows 8 goes further and allows users to mount disk images to use them without having to put them on a disk or get a third-party driver. Let’s get started!

Monday, August 22, 2011

There are many ways that you can burn a DMG in Windows that involves third party software that proved to be no success for me. However, there is a way to use Mac to burn the DMG on your PC and its called iAtkos. Since in this case, you only have one disk burner, you will need to make USB media. In my experiences, TransMac scrapped a Dual Layer DVD when it tried to burn the Retail Snow Leopard DMG to it, but it was successful at creating USB media.

Google Plus: Hangouts

imageGoogle Plus has some features that make Facebook useless. For instance, despite having to invite people to chat because it is the same chat that is used in Gmail, the chat in Google + and Gmail can call, video call, and group chat seamlessly and without hassle. Google Plus’s Chat can also go Off the Record – an incognito for chat- and transfer files. You can also change your status in Google’s chat. These are all things that Facebook chat lacks.

Facebook recently launched video calling powered by Skype for Facebook. It requires you to install a plug in and then you will be able to do one on one chats with your Facebook friends. However, considering that Skype’s group video chat requires a subscription, chances are, Facebook won’t be so lucky when it comes to matching up with Hangouts.

Hangouts is Google’s advanced Group Video Chatting service which will put the talking person center stage, IM as a group and stream a YouTube video as a group and watch it simultaneously. Hangouts is also free.
